প্রফেসর শঙ্কু গিরিডিতে কোন এক সময় থাকাকালে তাঁর চাকর প্রহ্লাদ হঠাৎ একদিন কোত্থেকে তাঁর সামনে এক আশ্চর্য প্রাণী এনে হাজির করে, যা শঙ্কুর জানামতে আনকোরা এক নতুন প্রজাতির নমুনা ব্যতিত কিছু নয়। জন্তুটি অদ্ভুতভাবে শঙ্কুর পোষও মেনে যায়, আর তার পরের দিনগুলো গড়ানোর সাথে সাথে শঙ্কু সেটিকে পর্যবেক্ষণ করে দেখেন যে আপাতদৃষ্টিতে প্রাণীটিকে একটি অদ্ভূত বানরের মত দেখতে হলেও সেটির মধ্যে লুকোনো কিছু বৈশিষ্ট্য আছে – যেমন সে সারা ঘর ঘুরে ঘুরে শঙ্কুর জিনিসপত্র নেড়ে চেড়ে দেখে, বোঝার চেষ্টা করে। শঙ্কুর প্রথমে শুধু প্রাণীটির বুদ্ধিমত্তা দেখেই তাক লেখে গেলেও অচিরেই সেটি এমন সব শারীরিক পরিবর্তন দেখাতে শুরু করে যে তিনি বিস্ময়ে হতবাক হয়ে যান। অবশ্য তখনো তার ধারণা ছিল না যে সামনে কি ঘটতে চলেছে।
Professor Shanku’s Stories – Ashcharja Jantu (The Extraordinary Animal) – Satyajit Ray
On one of his periods of stay in Giridi, Professor Shanku’s servant, Prahlad, brings a strange animal that he got from a friend in the village into the house. Shanku is surprised when he sees it, for the animal is unlike any that he has seen or heard of. Shanku decides to keep and study it, and soon finds out the creature to be more curious and intelligent than any other. However, if its intelligence surprises the professor, the changes in the animal which follow astounds him. In the end, Shanku gets an inkling of the animal’s special ability, but he does not know that there is still more to come.
