আজ ব্যোমকেশ বক্সীর একটি গল্প – চিত্রচোর। কঠিন অসুখ হতে সম্প্রতি আরোগ্য লাভ করা ব্যোমকেশ যখন কোন এক প্রত্যন্ত গঞ্জে হাওয়া বদলাতে এসেছে, এমন সময় সেখানে তাঁর এক আলাপীর ঘর হতে একটি ছবি চুরি যায়। মামুলি একটি ছবি কেন রহস্যজনকভাবে চুরি যাবে, তা কেউ বুঝে ওঠার আগেই সেই ভদ্রলোকের বন্ধুদের বাড়ি থেকেও ছবি চুরি যেতে শুরু করে। স্বাভাবিকভাবেই ব্যোমকেশকে ঘটনার তদন্তে নামতে হয়, আর সময়ের প্রবাহের সাথে সাথে অন্য সব কিছু ছাপিয়ে তাঁর মনে প্রশ্ন জাগে – ছবিগুলো চুরি যাওয়াই কি মূল ঘটনা, নাকি সেগুলো বড় কোন ঘটনার ভূমিকামাত্র?

A Byomkesh Bakshi story today. ChitroChor (The Picture Thief) starts with Byomkesh visiting some rural town as a change of air after a long illness. As it happens with detective stories, a mystery soon develops – a seemingly ordinary picture gets mysteriously stolen from the house of a wealthy local gentleman. Before anyone can figure out why, more thefts are reported – all pictures, and all belonging to the gentlemen’s friend circle. Byomkesh takes up the case, and he has to soon find whether the thefts are by themselves a thing, or whether they are leading up to something much bigger.

সম্প্রতি লক্ষ্য করেছি যে এই সাইটের পাঠকদের মধ্যে অনেকেই আসেন ব্যোমকেশ বক্সীর গল্প পড়তে। অথচ এ পর্যন্ত ব্যোমকেশের গল্প তুলেছি মাত্র একটি, তাই আজ ব্যোমকেশ-ভক্তদের জন্যে আরেকটি গল্প তুলে দিলাম। পথের কাঁটার প্রেক্ষাপট বিংশ শতাব্দীর শুরুর দিকের কলকাতা, আর গল্পটির শুরু দিনে-দুপুরে খোলা রাস্তার মাঝে ঘটা কিছু রহস্যজনক খুনের মধ্যে দিয়ে। প্রথম কটি খুনের তদন্তে ব্যোমকেশের ডাক না পড়লেও পরের দিকে তার হাতে খুনগুলোর সাথে সম্পর্কিত একটি ঘটনার তদন্তভার এসে পরে। আর ফলস্বরূপ ব্যোমকেশকে নামতে হয় এমন এক আততায়ীর সন্ধানে, যার বুদ্ধি আর অভিনবত্ব দুটোই অসাধারণের কাতারে। ব্যোমকেশকে নিয়ে শরদিন্দু বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের লেখা দ্বিতীয় গল্প এটি, যা প্রথমটির মতই রহস্যপ্রিয় পাঠকদের মন ধরে রাখবে।

Lately, I have noticed that a lot of the visitors on this site come looking for stories of Byomkesh Bakshi. So, in deference to popular demand, here is his second adventure – one that is perhaps more novel than the first. Pather Kanta (Obstruction) starts with the mysterious deaths of several wealthy men in Kolkata amidst crowds in broad daylight. As the police struggle to find the killer, Byomkesh parses out certain traits that are common to the supposed murderer, and when the survivor of an attempt presumably made by the killer turns up on his doorstep, Byomkesh finds himself hot on the trail of an illusive assassin. For Byomkesh fans as well as those who are uninitiated, this is a gripping story that you will surely enjoy.

গোয়েন্দা গল্প বলতে এতদিন এই ব্লগে ফেলুদার অভিযানগুলোকেই বুঝিয়েছি। তবে বাংলা সাহিত্যে ফেলুদা ছাড়াও বেশ কয়েকজন স্মরণীয় গোয়েন্দা চরিত্র আছেন, যাদের কথা এতদিন বলা হয়নি। শরদিন্দু বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের সৃষ্টি ব্যোমকেশ বক্সী তাদেরই একজন, যার আবির্ভাব হয় ১৯২৫ সালে (১৩৩১ বঙ্গাব্দ)। ৪ দশক পরে আসা উত্তরসুরী ফেলুদার মতন ব্যোমকেশও একজন তরুণ শখের গোয়েন্দা, যদিও নিজেকে তিনি গোয়েন্দার বদলে ‘সত্যান্বেষী’ (সত্যের অন্বেষণ/সন্ধানকারী) বলেই পরিচয় দেন। ব্যোমকেশের গল্পগুলো ফেলুদারগুলোর চাইতে ছোট আর কম গভীর হতে পারে, কিন্তু সেগুলোতে ক্ষুরধার মস্তিস্ক, অভিনবত্ব আর আধুনিকতার অভাব নেই। তাই আত্মপ্রকাশের পর ৯০ বছর কেটে গেলেও ব্যোমকেশ আজও সেই প্রখর বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত তরুণ, যার প্রাসঙ্গিকতা এখনো আগের মতোই অটুট। বাংলা গোয়েন্দা সাহিত্যে বোমকেশ একটি স্মরণীয় চরিত্র, তাই আজ তার পরিচয়স্বরূপ তাকে নিয়ে শরদিন্দু বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের লেখা প্রথম গল্প – সত্যের সন্ধানে।

Till now, the words ‘detective’ and ‘Feluda‘ have been synonymous in this blog. So this time, a change that is appropriate to say the least. Byomkesh Bakshi, a character penned by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, has been a memorable character in Bangla detective fiction. First appearing in 1925 (1331 Bangabda), he predates the more well-known Feluda by four decades. Yet his sharpness and intellect, and the relevance of his stories in the modern context make them as appealing as ever to today’s readers. Shorter than those of Feluda’s, Byomkesh’s stories are a perfect light read for the lazy afternoons and quiet nights.
