Today’s post is about a rather Bengali song that is not only beautiful in its music and meaning, but also significant in how it a borrowal from a different culture. Prolific though he was, Rabindranath Thakur did borrow quite often from other literary/music traditions. One of the most famous example of this is the popular Bangla song, Purano Shei Diner Kotha, whose tune and lyrics were heavily influenced by the Scottish song, Auld Lang Syne. For Bangalees who believe in cross-cultural exchange, the song is a fascinating, early example of how the West influenced one of the greatest minds of Asia and the world, and for those who lend towards cultural ‘purity’, it is a reminder that not all exchanges are reductions. More than anything else, though, it is a song of friendship, and if you are so inclined to think, of yearning and love.
The Bangla version by Thakur and the Scottish original are both presented below for your eyes, as are YouTube renditions of the songs for your ears. I hope you like them. : )

Auld Lang Syne
(Scottish Original of Purano Shei Diner Katha)
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?
CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stoup!
and surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak’ a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae run about the braes,
and pou’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
sin’ auld lang syne.
CHORUS
We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,
frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar’d
sin’ auld lang syne.
CHORUS
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!
and gie’s a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak’ a right gude-willie waught,
for auld lang syne.
CHORUS
