Pather Panchali (Song of the Road) – Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay
Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road) by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, is one of the most celebrated works in Bangla literature. As far as accolades go, there is not much I can say that has not been already said, but it needs to be mentioned that perhaps no other work in Bangla, and even perhaps world literature, compares to the novel in its representation of a rural life from the perspective of a little boy (Apu) from a poor family. Like Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s other works, Pather Panchali too does not have a conclusion towards which it is directed. Instead, the narratives loses itself in a languid but beautiful flow that is interspersed with little Apu’s joys and sorrows – for instance, his seeing a train for the first time, and his offense at not heeded by a girl with whom he wants to play. The narrative is not even throughout, however. As Apu grows up, the realities of his world become starker, and on the last page of the novel, an adolescent Apu is left trying to become a man. In many ways, Pather Panchali is a familiar story of our childhoods, and the close-knit families from which many of us come. But it is with this ordinariness that it captures the reader, stirring up the most intimate and beautiful of childhood memories, and anchors itself to his/her heart. That every Bangalee should read this Bibhutibhushan masterpiece goes without saying. So here it is, for your eyes.
(Something that you might find interesting: The story was taken to the global audience by eminent Indian film director Satyajit Ray, whose début with Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road), brought him and his genre of Indian cinema critical acclaim across the world. Ray’s personal account of the making of the film can be found in his autobiography Ekei Bole Shooting. While Ray’s direction was crucial in presenting the narrative, he always took particular care to acknowledge Bibhutibhushan’s influence on him. Those who have read Feluda’s stories will know that Bibhutibhushan was the sleuth’s favorite writer. )
